Dawn Bell

The race you’ll be taking part in?
1000 Miler

How many Massive Adventures adventure cycle races have you taken part in overall?
2 Durban Dash Down – 2016 & 2017. I was entered to do the Up last year but getting pneumonia a month before put a stop to that plan!

What you’re most looking forward to on the race this year?
The simplicity of riding my bike all day for several days. Riding through the country side and enjoying the beauty of some of the more remote parts of our country. The challenge of seeing how far I can push my body and mind. The challenge of being completely self sufficient.

Tell us your cycling story?
My husband and I bought Mountain Bike’s just over 10 years ago when we moved to Gauteng.

After about 6 months of “climbing the walls” over the weekend with no beach to go to the mountain biking was a real sanity saver. I can still remember in those days thinking that 50km was my absolute maximum distance until I discovered the Freedom Challenge. Once you get a taste for endurance cycling it gets in your blood and there is just no turning back.

Steadily I grew taking on more and more challenges.

It’s been an incredible journey and one I intend to continue. A friend & I were discussing how we are always getting comments about being crazy and why would you want to do such things. The fact is those people have never tried it and most people who do keep coming back for more.

I love riding my bike and it is definitely “my happy place” 🙂
